@oldtimejazzfan He spent many years of his life in France, descended from a French-Creole family of Louisiana, and married a French woman, which earned him the French citizenship. Back then, in the US, a black? man could not even ride on a bus without being harassed. He was French. Even his name was pronounced in its original French.

@Rachegotter You are wrong. Of course, he spent many years in France before he settled there for good in 1951. His 3rd wife was German,? Elisabeth Ziegler, who he knew already in the twenties, before he was married twice to American women. Many Creoles had French names: Albert Nicholas, Omer Simeon, Paul Barbarin, Barney Bigard, Alphonse Picou, George Baquet etc. and most of them played clarinet.

@davidjd Yes, Bechet played soprano saxophone here, and also clarinet, but he? was less recorded on clarinet.

Yes, Bechet played soprano saxophone? here, and also clarinet, but he was less recorded on clarinet. Both with a tone unlike any other I’ve heard.

@davidjd Steve Lacy was a very interesting modern soprano saxist; spent a lot of his career playing only Monk tunes; excellent album with Mal Waldron “I Remember Thelonious”. Not everyones taste but I dig him a lot. Some of his stuff’s on youtube. As different as Trane and Bechet were, Lacy’s different again.
And then there’s Roland? Kirk – — and, of course, there would’ve been me too if only I could’ve played the thing in tune …

I wonder if the young lady? introducing a programme about Beshay [bechet] as she said it as becket as in thomas`a becket thinks or was told about her mistake. i know her name but would not dream of telling anyone,this was some years ago on radio 3 bbc.

@oldtimejazzfan Hi . Jazzfan. I know exactly what I meant,this lady on radio 3 was introducing a tribute programme about Sidney Bechet [ obviously to jazz people like you & I] should be said as? Beshay, she announced the name as Becket,as in Thomas a` Becket. , now for a person to be introducing a jazz legend such as Sidney Bechet, you would think she herself or the producer ,would have made sure she had it right. any way nothing serious I just thought it of interest. Thank for your interest.
